However, this also means that ID3’s hypothesis space introduces no additional bias, and that ID3 can overfit the data if the tree grows too large or complex.
One of the limitations of ID3 is that it is biased to select attributes with more possible values, which are not necessarily the best attributes. This is because the information gain criterion tends to favor attributes that have a large number of distinct values, as they can create more partitions of the data and reduce the entropy more. However, this may lead to problems such as overfitting, where the tree becomes too specific to the training data and fails to generalize well to new data. For example, if an attribute has a unique value for each example, such as an ID number, then splitting by that attribute will result in a perfect information gain, but it will also create a leaf node for each example, which is useless for prediction.
